Great to have you back on line David,
I too am looking at how to fund "going back to school" for a PhD.
Like you I think the injection of positive social vibes was very important.
Pity I had to duck out of the Thursday evening.
dmb says:
You too!?! I'm genuinely thrilled at this news. If its any consolation, Bob
had to duck out of the Thursday evening festivities. But it might break your
heart to learn that some of us went until dawn. I was planning to sit and
have a beer with Mark Maxwell, but never thought we'd party all night
together. Sorry you missed it.
Ian said:
I also thought your paper, and the emotional connection you made with
Bob, on the Orphic mythology, was the most significant moment in the
conference. I made some remarks about in the blog link earlier in the
thread. ...Can't wait to see your paper published for us all to see.
dmb says:
At the risk of over-dramatizing that moment, I have to say I was glad to be
sitting when we learned about that Orphic connection because I very nearly
fainted. I mean that literally. I was already completely overwhelmed by the
general reception, but then Bob spoke up and blew my mind. I don't want to
say too much about it yet, except in whispered tones to close friends, but
that moment rocked my world. I was very, very grateful to come back and find
your generous report because I wasn't quite sure that it really happened. It
was like a dream. And thanks for the photos too. You captured one of my
favorite moments; Bob sitting between Paul and me. I love that shot, even
though it only shows the back of my head.
The paper needs a little work. I need to add the improvised remarks, ones
added during the actual presentation, and generally clean up some typos and
such. But I promise there will be no major changes. That would be cheating.
Don't hold your breath, I'm presently way behind on everything from laundry
to lawn mowing. As I understand it, Anthony will probably launch his site
with a "virtual conference", which would include all the papers. But when
its ready I can easily send it to anyone who wants to take a look. Its 6 or
7 pages long so posting it here might not be such a great idea. Speaking of
the papers, which I haven't even mentioned yet in terms of their substance
because I'm only reporting my personal reactions, I have to say that Richard
Loggins probably would have stole the show if he'd been there to delivery it
in person. It was amazing, brilliant and original. I know Annabell
(beautiful Gav's beautiful gal) Ant and Bob were impressed by it too.
dmb had said:
Dr. Anthony McWatt is my hero. ...I want to do what he did. I want to go
back to school and try to earn the first AMERICAN PhD on the MOQ. If there
were a third MOQer Doctor all we'd need then is some leather jackets and
we'll have ourselves an international metaphysical motorcycle gang. Whadya
say? Who's with me?
Paul replied:
I have to admit that it has been in my thoughts since the conference.
dmb says:
Wow. This news is music to my ears. And then there were four. Isn't it
funny? There must have been some kind of powerful magic going on at the
conference. Pinch me. One thing though, if we become the fab four
filosophers I'm NOT gonna be the Ringo despite my being the luckiest guy in
the world. Ha!
Marsha replied too:
GO FOR IT!!! The journey is everything, and you have everything to gain.
And you've got plenty of golden gumption.
dmb says:
Thanks. I appreciate that and I think you're quite right. What do I have to
lose? It means a lot of hard work, but I think its the kind of work I love.
And as they say, it only FEELS like work if you HAVE TO do it. Sometimes it
seems a little too ambitious and inappropriate for a guy my age but then I
think, "Why the hell not? I sure can't think of anything to do that would be
better."
Ant said:
Thanks so much for the update and kind words. I can't wait to see the first
American PhD on the MOQ either and I bet his name will be one Dr Buchanan!
....Here's to next year's conference and our new motorcycle gang,
dmb says:
As President of the AMFC (posters and lunch buckets are on sale in the lobby
after the show) it was my duty and my pleasure to file a report. I'm just
getting started and suspect I'll be talking about the conference until
everyone is sick of it. Ha! I want to apologize one more time for bending
your ears so much and for that clumsy farewell. I felt bad about saying so
much, asking too much of you and was really, really sad to see the whole
thing come to and end. So as you made your way to the train station I went
up to my room and felt rather weepy and depressed for a while. But then I
took a shower, got over myself, went out and met some nice people. It was
fabulous. The trip back was smooth as silk and I got big hugs and kisses
from Sally and Max before I even put my luggage down or made it through the
front door.
