    Not sure what you mean by "authentic living." Could you explain? Thanks.

    Yes. 12-step meetings are "structured openness" in which one is given
    permission to be himself which, in light of constant social pressures to
    conform, is the hardest thing in the world to be. It's truly amazing what
    happens to people when all criticism is suspended and each individual is
    totally accepted by a group for who he is. The anonymity helps. And as you
    say, by surrendering or "letting go," freedom from inner demons is often
    achieved. The paradox is mind-numbing, which helps to explain its curative
    power.

    I see them as two sides of the same coin. Both are needed. But as you
    point out, spiritual transformation isn't always for the better, as the
    world is now learning again to its sorrow.
