I was talking about the modern 'born again' experience mostly. Who knows
what Jesus was really talking about. All we can do is interpret his words
in the spirit in which they were given. When he says 'love thy neighbour',
Jesus might have been saying "don't piss off the guy next door to you
because you might need him someday." But that's not a very useful
interpretation. Rather we should take it to mean that we should hold each
person in equal regards as though she was our mother or our sister. So
you're right, not the law written in the books and interpreted by the
priests, but the law that is written on each of our hearts.
[Case]
Here Jesus is quoting Leviticus 19:18 from the Old Tstment. His more
refined version of it is known as the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you
would have other do unto you" This is actually an inversion of a maxium
attributed to the pharasee Hillel, who was alive when Jesus was born. Hillel
said, "Do not unto others as you would not have others do unto you." Notice
the active and passive consequences of these versions of the same idea.
As for the spirit in which Jesus gave his words we know even less about that
than we do about the words themselves. You are right though we are pretty
much stuff with modern interpretations.
