Yea, just the other day, in fact, my cat was telling me how he has finally
figured out the optimum temperature at which he should drink his milk.
Until then he had no idea whether he liked his little feline tongue scolded
or not. Poor little bugger could hardly talk with all those blisters. Good
job he's smart though because he has some dinky little algorithms worked out
to stop it happening again.
This kind of anthropomorphic indulgence seriously overburdens the term
'intellect' in my opinion. When we hear of a bunch of trees on the internet
debating whether or not humans have intellect then I'll accept your
difficult-to-imagine-otherwise proposition.
And for those, including yourself, who don't think a brain is necessary for
intellect, please invite a houseplant (only if it's qualified) to talk you
through the procedure to surgically remove your brain and then report back
to us to confirm the veridical merit of your conjecture.
