    Hi Nic:

joe: To talk about this statement I have to describe different ways of perceiving and constructing 'words', abstraction, trust, and intuition. I am exploring the instinctive sensing of reality, intuition. I can see a need to connect intuition to abstraction. The mechanism I propose is a mystical one. To go from intuition to awareness seems simple. Awareness is generated by my DNA. To go from awareness to abstraction is more obscure.

Mystical comes from the Greek word 'mystes' meaning an initiate. An initiate into what? 'Mystic' is defined in Funk and Wagnall's dictionary in the second meaning adj. Of or designating an occult or esoteric rite, practice, belief, religion, etc. (The 'etc.' seems to render the definition a bit vague.)

The idea of an 'initiate' has been around awhile. I hope it doesn't apply just to an egomaniac. Maybe an approach to a way of knowing reality attracts followers. After a time one has to be initiated into a right-thinking approach. Does Quality fit into this category, like monasticism to religion or mythology?

'Myth' is a traditional story, usually focusing on the deeds of gods or heroes, often in explanation of some natural phenomenon, as the origin of the sun, etc. (There is that 'etc.' again) It purports to be historical but is useful to historians principally for what it reveals of the peoples it describes or among whom it was current. op.cit.

Is there a connection between 'mystical' and 'myth'? Is the use of 'mystic' the proper way to describe how my awareness attaches a purpose and existence to an abstracted pattern? Ohhhh! Art and abstraction are mystical.

The moral levels in the three brains. It is easiest to see the intellectual level in the brain that vibrates to purpose. Sporting events from the olympics have always put on display people who have risen to the intellectual level in their physical activities. The social level of purpose is procreation, the organic level is nourishing oneself. Tension is present indicating dynamics are present.

In the brain that vibrates to existence, it is harder to see the intellectual level. What existence is a higher order than celebrity at the social level, or being born at the organic level? The miraculous is different, but activity is usually associated with the miraculous involving purpose. I suppose mystical existence in the fine arts could be considered the intellectual order of existence. Tension follows beauty.

In the brain that vibrates to quality the intellectual order is most obscure. Plans are made to be broken! When the manipulation of symbols includes patterns in the awareness, and a complete understanding of the patterns results, there is a certainty of action based upon the understanding the pattern, and not merely an intuition of the aspect of purpose in the pattern. This would be in intellectual order quality. Once the intellectual order quality is achieved, it is hard to see how it could be lost. All three brains would have to be included. Buddha, Christ, Heroes! Aquinas stating that what he had written was as straw indicates how difficult it is to achieve intellectual quality. Social quality would seem to be like Pirsig's description of the grace of the Victorians. Organic quality might be unhindered associations, The tension in intellectual quality is unbearable. Cf. Christ's death.
