Why should the law ignore competent evidence?

    JOHNNY
Is lying to your finance about your assets
    > illegal too? Is that grounds for annulment?

    RICK
No, it's not. Lying about your financial condition alone is not grounds for
annulment, as far as I know, in any state.

    JOHNNY
I think it is related to just general
    > misrepresentation. How about saying your job is going well and you'll be
    > rich someday, or that you LOVE ballet? Or how about not disclosing a
    family
    > history of belching? Or more seriously, something like a heart defect

    RICK
Generally, the party line is that the fraud has to go to "the heart of the
marriage" to be grounds for annulment. This is usually limited to things
like pregnancy, maternity, infertility, the intention not to have children,
and important details of personal history and character (ie. if you don't
happen to mention to your fiancée that you used to be the Grand Wizard of
the KKK, you'd be well-advised to prepare yourself for an annulment when she
    finds out).

    RICK
Another enlightened soul casts his vote for the bliss of ignorance... how
    inspiring :-)

    JOHNNY
    > Yeah, don't you trust me is just as treacherous as don't you love me,
    isn't
    > it. I'd say, based on experience, NO I DON'T TRUST YOU.

    RICK
If you don't trust your betrothed... don't get married. If you want to get
married anyway, I'd recommend a prenup, not a covenant marriage.

    JOHNNY
      I'm glad
    > Massachusetts doesn't have two marriages to argue about. I think there
    > should just be one marriage for everyone.

    RICK
I'm inclined to agree. Loving commitment cannot be created by statutes or
    sanctions.

    JOHNNY
    > All staying married to an abuser means is that you can't get married to
    your
    > next abuser...

    RICK
All spouses are abusers? Once again, your 'expectation' fixation has
blinded you to distinctions based on Quality (ie. some spouses are BETTER
    than others).
