Hey again Ian,
I remembered that our old-forum cohort Anthony McWatt once pointed out "The
first academic paper Pirsig wrote on Quality was 'Quality in Freshman
Composition' delivered at the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association
regional convention on October 13th 1961." This would probably place
Pirsig's thoughts on Quality around 59 when he started teaching rhet.
Moreover, the bio states further: "Pirsig taught composition and rhetoric
from 1959 to 1962 at Universities in Montana and Illinois. Toward the end
of this period, he sufered a nervous breakdown and was subjected to electric
shock therapy".
Given all this, I think ZMM can be seen as the result of four composite
sources: (1) The paper on Quality in Freshman Composition, (2) the original
brief light-hearted ZMM essay, (3) the narrative about the motorcycle trip,
(4) Pirsig's experiences as a "mental patient".
take care
rick
