I think I'm with Steve on this one. I don't mind calling someone a "4th
level person" as shorthand for "a person dominated by 4th level values" but
I think that's all Pirsig is doing when identifies an individual with a
level. I agree with you that the novel form was meant as an example of what
the levels look like in the real world, but...

Not that we want to go around passing out grades or slapping labels. I'm
just saying that this idea of levels in conflict is designed to explain
things that otherwise seem like sheer madness, like Nazism and genocide and
diet soda. I find it very handy as a tool when looking and current events
and predicting the lotto numbers. (I'm worth billions.)
