Right. Ok! I understand how you came to your conclusions and I understand how
Pirsig came to his. I think I have learned something from both of you. I
disagree about each of our conclusions, but at this point it is pointless to go
on arguing these points. :-) But, my original question pertained to
self-consciousness which you suggested distinguishes humans from other organisms
and I agree. You have given lots of thought to language. What of my suggestion
that self-consciousness is only a property of language? Forget about
consciousness. I have conceded that point to you. We will never know. I want
to know what makes humans different from other life-forms. I think this
explains the intellectual level. Or at least has something to say about it. We
are self-conscious because we are language users. And language is a product of
the social level. Do you see anything wrong with this? If so, what? If not,
why do I think this is more important than you do in explaining the intellectual
level?
