Part I.
Dear forum,
dmb suggests that coherence has nothing to do with the, 'Anti-theism in the
MOQ' thread.
This thread is described by dmb as follows:
dmb: Sun Jul 25 2004 - 19:13:03 BST
Dear MOQers:
The following quotes have been extracted from chapter six of Anthony
McWatt's book. They are also known as the Copleston annotations. (The
numbers will help you find them.) My original intention was to find out the
context of one particular passage, the one where Pirsig says the MOQ is
anti-theistic, but I was diverted from that task by the abundance of
interesting thoughts on religion and spirituality in general. I'm not even
sure what to do with it all yet, but thought it might spark some
conversation just to throw them out on the table. Enjoy...
Mark 1-8-04: Right from the beginning dmb is, "diverted from that task by the
abundance of
interesting thoughts on religion and spirituality in general." And he is,
"not even sure what to do with it all yet..." dmb may be diverted and unsure, but
this privilege is not allowed for us lesser mortals, who must be stringent
and accurate in all we wish to say.
I responded with the following:

Dear forum,
These quotes may support coherence, (additions by me):
177 "Intuition sometimes is an equivalent of Dynamic Quality. However, its
also a kind of biological instinct. Since Western philosophy confuses these
two, the MOQ avoids the term."
Intuition has been suggested to be intellectual coherence between a
repertoire of sq intellectual patterns. Thus, replacing coherence at the
intellectual
level for intuition avoids problems.
Mark 1-8-04: I do not know what dmb felt CA177 had to do with, "thoughts on
religion and spirituality in general" but it is included non the less. My
comment is simply a view already stated in TEOC, that intuition is given a more
precise definition in MOQ terms, and one which does not resort to theism for a
supernatural cause of inspiration.
However, dmb insists, "Another problem would be his constant hijacking of
threads to discuss this pet idea, which has absolutely nothing to do with
anti-theism."
180 "The MOQ supports both conservatism and liberalism at the same time.
Freedom and order are contradictory but both are necessary at the same
time."
Coherence is the optimum state between DQ and sq.
Mark 1-8-04: I do not know what dmb felt CA180 had to do with, "thoughts on
religion and spirituality in general" but it is included non the less. If one
takes conservatism to be representative of static rigidity, and liberalism to
be representative of Dynamic freedom, then my observation that coherence is an
optimum patterned state is relevant.
