If I may butt in here... It seems to me that your so-called friend is just
plain rude and a little bit neurotic. A real friend would know better than
to interrupt a project. Why should he expect you to drop what you're doing?
Maybe once or twice if he had a much, much more attractive offer in mind,
but what guy doesn't understand the need for head space and such?

No need to make it overcomplicated, right? My wife feels much the same. I'
m a little self-conscious in misrepresenting the situation 'objectively' and
maybe I'm overcompensating. Both objective and subjective points of views
    have strengths and weaknesses.

We have resolved our difficulties, or at least the ego defenses are down
enough for some honest conversation. Part of this resolution is what you'd
expect: respecting each other's value systems (honestly giving them enough
credence to work). This is much easier to get to if one allows for multiple
truths. Otherwise, claiming to accept another's value system as legitimate
in its own right will have a false ring to it (ego and absolute truth being
a low quality combination) and the other will pick up the insincerity.

Thanks for your support and butting in.

    Live well,
    Steve
