Rebecca,
I have been enjoying your posts..I love hearing new
voices on the site..makes it more dynamic.
Although your last statement is interesting I find
that idea has conflicted feelings among the group.
I think this conflict stems from the understanding of
the buddhist notion of self. So I would love to hear
your ideas on it.
Some philosophers here do show the importance of self
but are usually lumped as ego-driven Randians,
Christain sheep, or some other label rather than
treating them as individuals (which would be more
consistent with the idea of importance of self)
I know that you are not promoting any selfish
behavior...so don't want to get into any difference
between selfish and importance of self (because i can
know where that will go straight to political hell
where importance of self + left is enlightened and
imprtance of self + right is egomaniac). I think if I
can see any reduction in this conflict it be if we
stayed away from a political approach to it and to
strictly stick to your idea of the importance of the
self in philosophy and how it conflicts with some
ideas of self (with buddhist influence) presented
here.
I really want to untangle this but not interested in
approaching it by any political,"normal" paranoia (is
the man behind the ads related to the man behind the
curtain btw?), etc. angle of it.
Just the idea of the importance of self....
I think Matt may have touched on this before? and also
another conflict with buddhist notion of desire. I am
not really sure Matt if had any ideas out of the
conflict or were you just pointing them out?
