Dear Johnny,

explanations.'
I prefer to think of 4th level patterns as (patterns in) exceptions on 3rd
level patterns. A 3rd level pattern of saving food for essential members of
a society (by status mechanisms, not by instinct) consists of exceptions on
the 2nd level pattern of eating whenever food is available and eating it is
safe. Thinking about what you do enables you to deviate from largely
habitual behaviour. The deviations form a new pattern that can be understood
by its motivation.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
