RON: I must come clean and tell you that I see all this attention to the
word as silly; as a knee jerk, emotional reaction. Otherwise, it is as Scott
offered
earlier -- reducing philosophy to a game. Either way, I see it as counter
productive to advancing your understanding.
ERIN: I will choose what is silly to spend time on and what is helpful to
advancing my understanding. If you find it is not helping your understanding then ignore the
thread.
RON: It appears that my usage of the word ‘Silly’ caused a knee-jerk
reaction.
Would this be because ‘Silly’ has some philosophical baggage I am unaware?
ERIN: Read (pronounce reed) the word silly in your context. It has nothing
to do with knee-jerk reactions to the word silly. Silly doesn't necessarily
have to be an attempt to belittle the value of a something. e.g. When I say
"Pee-Wee Big Adventure" and "Zoolander" are fun silly movies, it is clear I
mean silly as something of value. When I read (pronounce reed) the word in
your context I don't see anything but that.
RON: I appreciate your not taking insult to the use of the word silly.
ERIN: It is hard to tell with internet communication but this sounds kind of sarcastic. If it is sarcastic and then let me say I appreciate your not missing the point of my posts to you. If I had written "I will choose what is helpful to advancing my understanding and if you find it is counter-productive then ignore the thread." would it help you see it has NOTHING to do with the word silly? and maybe this is just some knee-jerk- blah blah blah assumption YOU have made
On another note....
There are quite a few characters that have joined up since I last left the group---it has inspired to make a Saturday Night Live Type Skit to parody the different styles everyone has when philosophizing with each other. Can I have your permission to create "the-know-nothing" philosopher character--- my first shot is with a man going around bragging about how humble he is. I probably won't share it with the group for fear of somebody having knee-jerk responses (which tends to lead to insults and irrelevent comments about my domain) but I know you are above being insulted so I won't fear that with you :-)
